OSI Group: An American Made Company with German Roots

At the turn of the 20th century, the United States was experiencing many revelations. One of the biggest revelations came via immigration. The first world war had ended and it was back to business as usual. The city of Chicago became the focal point for thousands of German-immigrants, and these immigrants played an important role in American society. Small business became the norm and America most certainly benefited from them. Chicago experienced a growth spurt in population thanks to all of the new inhabitants. A quarter of the city’s population was made-up of German-immigrants, and Otto Kolschowski just so happened to be one of them.

Kolschowski became a major player in foodservices thanks to his new business. His vision was to provide the immediate area with fresh meats. This tiny meat locker was located in Oak Park, Illinois, but who knew that it would grow into an international powerhouse. OSI Group is the company’s name, and it has set new standards in providing food products to the general public. This specific company is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois, but it has many other facilities in Utah, in California and in Iowa. The Utah-based facility was its first facility that was opened outside of the Chicago area. The year was 1977, but the company would continue to expand its borders throughout the 1980s.
